OVERVIEW

Understanding irritable bowel syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) involves recurring abdominal pain alongside changes in bowel habits, such as constipation, diarrhea or both. Bloating and a feeling of incomplete emptying can also occur. Symptoms may come and go, and their effect on daily life can vary.

IBS is a disorder of gut-brain interaction: the way the digestive system and nervous system communicate can influence gut sensitivity and bowel function. This does not mean your symptoms are imagined. An assessment helps establish whether your symptoms fit IBS or need investigation for another cause. IBS is different from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

When to seek medical assessment

Blood in your stool, black or tarry stools, unexplained weight loss or unexplained anemia need medical assessment and should not be assumed to be IBS. Discuss new, changing or persistent digestive symptoms with a healthcare provider, including any family history of bowel disease or colorectal cancer.

Your care options

Naturopathic IBS care with Dr. Kim Townsend, ND

Start with a clear picture. Dr. Kim reviews when symptoms began, bowel patterns, meals, medications, supplements and previous investigations. If you already have an IBS diagnosis, the discussion can build on your existing care. Constipation-predominant IBS (IBS-C), diarrhea-predominant IBS (IBS-D) and mixed IBS (IBS-M) may call for different priorities.

Nutrition that fits your needs. Your clinical nutrition discussion may include meal patterns, fluid intake, fibre and foods you suspect aggravate symptoms. The aim is to identify useful changes you can maintain, rather than assume everyone needs the same restrictive diet. If a low-FODMAP approach is being considered, discuss whether it is suitable.

Testing with a specific purpose. IBS is assessed from a symptom pattern and clinical history; there is no single blood or stool test that confirms it. Tests may help investigate other explanations, such as celiac disease, when appropriate. Dr. Kim can review existing results and discuss whether additional assessment or lab testing would change your care.  Dr. Kim may suggest a food sensitivity test to rule out potential food aggravants as well.

Consider the whole treatment plan. Care may include nutrition and daily routines, with selected supplements considered according to your symptoms, medications and the available evidence. Some IBS treatments, including medications and gut-directed psychological therapies, are provided by other healthcare professionals. Naturopathic support can fit alongside that care.

Review what is actually helping. Follow-up appointments are an opportunity to assess benefit, tolerability and cost, and adjust the plan. The goal is practical symptom management and a better day-to-day experience, with further medical assessment when needed.

YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENT

What to expect at your first appointment...

Your first appointment gives you time to explain your symptoms, ask questions and discuss what you hope to improve. Dr. Kim will review your health history, medications, supplements, and any previous testing or treatment to understand your concerns.

Together, you’ll discuss appropriate next steps and how naturopathic support may fit into your care. Bring any relevant test results and a list of your medications and supplements, if available.

Living with IBS

A plan you can use between appointments

IBS care should make sense outside the consultation room. Your priorities may be fewer interruptions at work, more confidence eating out, or a clearer understanding of bowel patterns. Discuss what improvement would look like for you so follow-up can focus on changes that matter.

A brief symptom record can help you describe your experience: note bowel habits, pain, meals and any changes in medicines or supplements. It does not need to become a detailed food diary or a reason to avoid more and more foods. Bring any previous results and a list of treatments you have tried, including what helped or caused side effects.

There is no single timeline for IBS. Symptoms and responses to treatment vary. If symptoms persist or change, review the diagnosis and plan with your healthcare team rather than continuing an ineffective approach indefinitely.

Townsend Naturopathic is located at 3480 Fairview Street, Unit 13, Burlington, with free on-site parking. In-person care is available for local patients, including those travelling from Oakville, Hamilton and the surrounding Halton area. Virtual consultations are available across Ontario when appropriate.

FAQ

IBS and naturopathic care: frequently asked questions

How can a naturopathic doctor help with IBS?

A naturopathic consultation can help you review symptoms, eating patterns, daily routines and previous treatment, and consider appropriate nutrition or other supportive options. At Townsend Naturopathic, Dr. Kim tailors recommendations to your situation and reviews how they fit with existing medical care. IBS is a long-term condition with variable symptoms; no approach can promise a cure or the same result for everyone.

What is the difference between IBS-C, IBS-D and IBS-M?

These terms describe the main bowel pattern: IBS-C is constipation-predominant, IBS-D is diarrhea-predominant, and IBS-M involves a mixture of both. A diagnosis also considers abdominal pain and the overall symptom history. The pattern helps guide care because an option that suits constipation may not suit diarrhea. Some people do not fit neatly into one subtype.

Do I need stool tests, food sensitivity tests or other IBS testing?

Not everyone needs the same tests. IBS is usually assessed through symptoms, history and an examination. More targeted tests are used to identify possible causes or to further investigate other potential conditions. A stool test or food sensitivity panel does not, by itself, establish an IBS diagnosis or explain every food-related symptom. Discuss what a test can answer, how reliable it is, and whether the result would change care.

Do I have to follow a low-FODMAP diet for IBS?

No. A low-FODMAP diet helps some people with IBS, but it is not suitable or necessary for everyone. When used, it is a structured process: a short initial restriction phase, reintroduction to assess tolerance, then a personalized diet with as much variety as possible. It is not intended to mean lifelong avoidance of every high-FODMAP food.

Are IBS and SIBO the same condition?

No. IBS is a disorder of gut-brain interaction, while small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) involves an excessive number of bacteria in the small intestine. Symptoms such as bloating and altered bowel habits can overlap, so symptoms alone do not establish which condition is present. Breath testing may be considered in selected circumstances; it is not automatically necessary for every person with IBS.

Can I book a virtual IBS appointment in Ontario?

Yes. Dr. Kim offers in-person naturopathic appointments in Burlington and virtual consultations for patients across Ontario when appropriate. Some symptoms or assessments require an in-person visit.

You can book online to view appointment options, or contact Townsend Naturopathic with questions. Check your own extended health plan for naturopathic coverage and any limits or referral requirements.
