OVERVIEW
Understanding Perimenopause and Menopause
Perimenopause is the transition leading up to menopause, when changing hormone levels can affect your menstrual cycle, sleep, mood and comfort. Menopause is generally identified after 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period, when there is no other explanation. Hormonal contraception, surgery and some medical treatments can make this less straightforward.
Your experience may be very different from someone else’s. Some women seek help for hot flashes or vaginal dryness; others notice disrupted sleep, brain fog or a change in how they feel day to day. Dr. Kim considers these concerns alongside your broader health, rather than assuming every symptom is caused by hormones.
Not sure where to start?
You don’t need to know whether your symptoms are related to perimenopause, menopause or something else before reaching out. Bring your questions and tell Dr. Kim what has changed. Your consultation is a place to make sense of your concerns, explore your options and discuss the next steps that fit your needs.

Naturopathic care for perimenopause and menopause
Experience in women's hormonal health. Dr. Kim brings over 25 years of clinical experience and a longstanding focus on women's health. Her background includes additional education in bio-identical hormones and work with OB/GYN Dr. Alvin Pettle. Learn more about Dr. Kim's background and approach.
A plan that fits your daily life. Care starts with what you most want to improve, whether that is sleep, comfort, energy or managing changes in your cycle. Recommendations may include clinical nutrition, realistic changes to daily routines, and selected herbal or nutrient support where appropriate. Dr. Kim reviews medications and supplements when considering recommendations.
Testing with a clear purpose. Your symptoms, menstrual history and medical background guide the assessment. Lab testing may be discussed when it could help investigate another cause or guide a treatment decision. A hormone panel is not automatically required for everyone experiencing menopausal symptoms.
Hormone therapy where appropriate. Dr. Kim offers bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) for suitable patients within her prescribing scope. Whether hormone therapy makes sense depends on your symptoms, medical history, preferences and individual risks. You will discuss the potential benefits, risks, alternatives and follow-up involved before deciding on a plan.
Your care can include collaboration with your family doctor or other healthcare providers. Follow-up visits provide an opportunity to review your response, answer questions and adjust recommendations.
YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENT
What to expect at your first appointment...
Your first appointment gives you time to explain your symptoms, ask questions and discuss what you hope to improve. Dr. Kim will review your health history, medications, supplements, and any previous testing or treatment to understand your concerns.
Together, you’ll discuss appropriate next steps and how naturopathic support may fit into your care. Bring any relevant test results and a list of your medications and supplements, if available.

Support as your symptoms and priorities change
Women's health needs can change over time. A plan that suited you during perimenopause may need to be revisited later. Follow-up appointments give you space to discuss what has improved, what remains difficult and whether your care needs to change.
Tracking a few priorities, such as quality of sleep, hot flashes or changes in your cycle, can make those conversations more useful. Dr. Kim can review recommendations, discuss any side effects or concerns, and help identify when additional medical assessment is appropriate.
Visit Townsend Naturopathic at 3480 Fairview Street, Unit 13, Burlington, with free on-site parking. Virtual consultations are available across Ontario when suitable, including for patients who prefer to attend from home.

What is the difference between perimenopause and menopause?
Perimenopause is the transition before menopause. You may still have periods, but their timing or flow can change, and symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats or disrupted sleep can begin. Menopause is generally identified after 12 months without a period when there is no other cause. The stage after this is called postmenopause. You can seek help at any stage. Read more about perimenopause and menopause from the NHS.
How can a naturopathic doctor support menopause symptoms?
A naturopathic consultation gives you time to discuss your symptoms, understand possible contributing factors and consider your options. At Townsend Naturopathic, Dr. Kim may discuss nutrition, sleep and daily routines, selected supplements or herbal medicines, and hormone therapy where appropriate. The plan depends on your health history and priorities. It can complement care from your family doctor or gynecologist, with follow-up to review how you are doing.
Do I need hormone testing for perimenopause or menopause?
Not always. In otherwise healthy people aged 45 or over, perimenopause and menopause can often be identified from symptoms and menstrual history without routine hormone testing. Hormone levels fluctuate during the transition, so a single result may not explain how you feel. Testing may be useful in other circumstances or to investigate different causes of symptoms. Dr. Kim will discuss the purpose of any recommended tests. See the NICE guidance on menopause assessment.
Is bio-identical hormone replacement therapy right for everyone?
No. Hormone therapy can help some menopausal symptoms, but suitability depends on your symptoms, medical history and individual risks. Bio-identical means a hormone has the same molecular structure as a hormone made by the body; it does not automatically make a product safer. Dr. Kim can discuss appropriate options within her prescribing scope, alternatives and monitoring. Learn about our BHRT service and read the ACOG patient guide to hormone therapy.
Can I book for PMS, PCOS or irregular periods if I am not menopausal?
Yes. Dr. Kim sees women at different life stages, including those with concerns about PMS, irregular cycles, PCOS, hormonal acne or fertility. Your consultation considers your symptoms, existing diagnoses and current care. Some concerns require medical investigation or specialist treatment, and naturopathic recommendations should fit into that broader plan. If pregnancy planning is your priority, you can also explore our fertility and pre-conception care.
Do you offer virtual women's health appointments across Ontario?
Yes. Townsend Naturopathic offers in-person appointments in Burlington and virtual consultations for patients across Ontario when appropriate. An in-person assessment or another healthcare provider may be recommended depending on your symptoms. You can book a consultation online and view available appointment options. If you are unsure which appointment to choose, contact the clinic before booking.
