Electro Dermal Screening (EDS) is a non-invasive diagnostic technique based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine and bioelectric medicine. It measures the electrical conductivity at specific acupuncture points on the skin, using this data to assess the functional state of the body's organs and systems and to test its energetic response to hundreds of different substances, including foods, environmental toxins, pathogens, hormones, and nutritional compounds.

The Method
How EDS Is Performed
Naturopathic Doctor, Kim Townsend, uses the EDS machine to measure electrical resistance through organ pathways, called acupuncture meridians. The meridians connect to organ systems via acupuncture points located along the pathway on the surface of the body. If any of these pathways are blocked, the organ system may become compromised and the body predisposed to disease. The EDS machine is able to measure the electrical resistance through these pathways using specific acupuncture points to discover any blockages. Dr. Kim tests points on the hands and feet which correspond to specific organ systems.
The instrument measures the electrical resistance at each point, generating a reading that reflects the energetic state of the corresponding organ or system. Dr. Kim then uses this data, alongside your health history and other diagnostic findings,to identify the key stressors and imbalances driving your health concerns.
One of EDS's most powerful applications is substance testing, the ability to assess your body's energetic response to hundreds of different compounds in a single session. This allows Dr. Kim to identify specific food sensitivities, nutritional needs, and remedies that resonate positively with your system, guiding a highly personalized treatment approach.
Integration
EDS as Part of Your Diagnostic Picture
The EDS machine provides important information about a patient’s physical and emotional health. Examples of body systems that are assessed include lymphatic, reproductive, hormonal, digestive, circulatory, and nervous systems. Testing the different organ systems allows the practitioner to determine imbalances and dysfunction in the body. The EDS machine helps to identify whether the cause is allergies, bacteria, viruses, heavy metals, parasites, pesticides, candida, etc.
Once the probable cause is isolated, then Dr. Kim can design an individualized treatment program that will support the body in eliminating this influence. The organs may be supported by using herbs, supplements, dietary changes, homeopathic remedies, acupuncture, and/or compounded remedies such as bio-identical hormones.
EDS testing using Dr. Kim’s Avatar machine assists in the assessment and treatment of infertility, hormonal imbalances, digestive disturbances, allergies, nervous system imbalance, viruses, depression, and many other conditions.
Food sensitivity testing can also be done using the EDS machine. This testing is beneficial in determining which foods weaken the body and therefore should be eliminated for a period of time in order to support the body’s healing response. She may also requisition an IgG blood test which is then sent to a lab for evaluation. A full report of food intolerances is given to the patient with recommendations on the dietary changes necessary to improve symptoms and overall health.
